Perched on a peninsula of land between a busy container port on the one side and a refined marina on the other lies the Royal Belgian Sailing Club Alberta. It is a naked building, conceived and functioning with a sailor’s logic.

The building’s behavior and floor plan calls for a dynamic use. A wooden heated core of stacked laminated pine beams is surrounded by an unheated passage of single glazed, steel windows. The passage provides passive solar gain and acts as an insulation zone in winter and as a ventilation zone in summer. The building can thus be modulated depending on the weather conditions and/ or the social occasion by opening or closing the doors of the wooden core to the passage, and/or those of the passage to the outside.

To be able to make optimal use of the buildings flexible character the user has to learn to understand the building and how it interacts with the environment.
