The JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll Island Resort lies on one of the typical coral islands of the north Maldives atoll in the Indian Ocean. As a stylish location to retreat to conceived with the highest demands on design and comfort, the 80 villas, of which 47 are on the water, combine island-inspired architecture with contemporary elegance in a special way.
The Atolye4N architects developed a design language for the project that is consciously oriented to traditional structural forms. The landing stage, inspired by the flight silhouette of the native Maakana heron, marks the starting point of the design of the site. Every villa has spacious terraces, an unobstructed view of the Indian Ocean and access to untouched lagoons. The buildings are reminiscent of the traditional Maldive "Gedhoru" huts with their Kajan roofs and bright turquoise doors, but at the same time make use of modern design principles. Clever references to Maldive handicrafts integrate seamlessly into the design and create a calm and harmonious haven. The villas themselves are characterised by a reduced design language, which is complemented by natural materials such as wood and stone as a homage to the rugged beauty of the island state. Floor-level glazing opens the rooms to the surroundings and allows the interior and exterior melt into each other visually and functionally. Open-air showers and pools within the protected site also create an intimate oasis. In this clear and peaceful interior design, switches from the LS 990 range by JUNG in aluminium lacquered create discreet contrasts in the precisely designed interior. Furthermore, a KNX system from JUNG is used in the resort. It takes over the functions of building automation technology and is also used among other things for the guest room management system. Light, air conditioning and other convenience elements can be operated with this in a user-friendly and energy-efficiency manner.
