House M

 Back to Projects list
Location
Shibuya, Japan
Year
2019

The site is located in a quiet residential area along an old road under the hill where Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine is located. As is often the case in urban areas, the neighbors are close to the house from three sides, and the apartment across the front road looks down on the house.

The exterior walls of the house are placed to the full extent of the site conditions, and a courtyard with a deck terrace is placed in the center of the wall, so that light and wind can be felt from anywhere in the deep interior space, and the ground floor has a flat access to the courtyard terrace. The courtyard terrace provides a good diagonal view and airy space, and at times creates a good distance between the family members across the courtyard terrace, a relationship that is important to each family member, and an expanse of space that is larger than the numerical value.
