Twin-House in Restelo

Lisbon, Portugal

In the Lisbon district of Restelo, a building from the late 1950s has been given new life. Through careful extension and redesign, a balance between the existing architecture and a modern design language has been achieved.

A new extension, covered in articulated slats in white lacquered aluminium supplements the original building and brings lightness to the ensemble. The interaction between open and closed facade elements creates a living interplay of light, visibility and private sphere. The choice of materials, including natural stone, wood and hand-made tiles, gives the house warmth and timelessness. On the inside, the house has been completely reorganised. The plinth area now serves not only practical purposes, but also offers space for a guest room, a small swimming pool and a private cinema. Above are generous living and dining areas where the rooms flow into each other. Specially made furnishings are found throughout the house and provide storage where it is needed. On the upper floor there are two guest rooms and an extensive master suite with a view of the Tagus river. A newly converted loft provides additional areas to retreat to along with a roof terrace with an extensive panorama. The combination of old and new is visible not only in the architecture, but also in the attitude: respect for what is present and openness for the new. In the whole building, switches and sockets from the LS 990 range from JUNG in white are used. Their clear design language and high-quality workmanship integrate seamlessly into the reduced interior and complement it both functionally and aesthetically.
