The winning design for a new standard New York City streetlight was selected after a two-stage international competition, initiated in 2004. Identifying the aesthetic and technological potential of LEDs, an elegant and sustainable design emerged, creating a new “classic for the future.” In contrast to the bulky cobra-heads associated with high-pressure sodium lamps, the streetlight takes on a slim, elongated profile enabled by the tiny size of its light source, which does not require a hefty decorative enclosure. The unique modular design facilitates the replacement of the LEDs over time, allowing the streetlight to keep pace with the evolution of technology while the overall appearance stays the same.
