Neubau Haus E Spital Interlaken, Unterseen/Schweiz
Bauherr: Spitäler Frutigen Meiringen Interlaken AG, CH-3800 Unterseen

- WellnessHostel3000

Award winner in the hotel and gastronomy category
Aua Grava, WellnessHostel3000 (2018-2020)
Client: Gemeinde Laax
Architects: SSA Architekten AG BSA SIA, BaselThe “wellnessHostel3000” project comprises the renovation of the existing “Aua Grava” indoor pool and the addition of a wellness area as well as the construction of a new youth hostel with around 170 beds. The new WellnessHostel 3000 by SSA Architekten is located between the existing buildings from the early 1980s, a school and the existing indoor swimming pool. The heart of the entire complex is the reception area high above the street at the level of the indoor pool roof. This area is accessed on the street side by an attractive, multi-storey cascading staircase. The modern new building is made of concrete, combined with light-colored wood and large windows. The rooms and lobby are furnished with Vitra furniture and decorative energy-efficient designer lighting, which creates an inviting atmosphere in the rooms, softly illuminates the building and contributes to a modern and attractive atmosphere. A particular gem is the colorful lighting in the wellness area with its object lights, which give the rooms their specific character. The eye-catching design luminaires are complemented by functional luminaires that take a back seat in their appearance and modulate and illuminate the architecture in an energy-saving way.
Jury statement:
In addition to the basic concept, good lighting here also means choosing the right luminaires and a lot of detailed work to turn what is actually a simply furnished destination in the Swiss mountains into a real experience. The lighting creates an atmosphere throughout that takes the hostel to higher spheres.

Conversion and renovation of the Fachmaturitätsschule Engelgasse, Basel (2015-2019)
Client: Bau- und Verkehrsdepartement, Kanton Basel-Stadt, Basel
Architects: ffbk Architekten AG, MünchensteinThe Fachmaturitätsschule Basel, built between 1961 and 1964 by the architects Hans Beck and Heinrich Baur, was completely renovated between 2015 and 2019 by FFBK from Basel. The three basic materials exposed concrete, aluminum and glass characterize the building. The existing lighting system was completely replaced and reinstalled using the latest technology. The very coherent, elemental architecture was the inspiration for the new luminaires. These were fitted with screen-compatible covers and dimmable power supply units. On the first floor, luminaires designed as lighting elements are positioned vertically in the ceiling and bring soft, low-shadow light into the room. Starting in the vestibule, the luminaires continue through the canteen and into the administration area, visually connecting these rooms. The classroom lighting, formerly just one strip light, now consists of three strip lights. Placed at a 90° angle to the façade, these strips blend into the ceiling and contribute to brightening the ceiling with a subtle indirect component.
